Michoacan rises quickly from a hot Pacific coastal plain south of Colima to the high reaches of the Sierra Madre Mountains. Long known as a principal agricultural region, the states' abundant water resources and fertile soil lend to the beauty and magic of the mountains, themselves carpeted in pine forests. Colorful Tarasco Indians live along the fertile shores of the many rivers and lakes, farming as they have done for generations. Villagers are well-known for their skills in creating truly beautiful handicrafts which are sold in local markets and frequently found in colonial plazas in towns around Lake Patzcuaro.

Michoacans' history is one of proud traditions and fierce independent convictions. Father Morelos, a national hero of the Mexican Independence, is revered throughout the state as its own native son. The state's capital, Morelia, was named in his honor.
